  10. I highly recommend Andre Bacard's new book for anyone who cares
  11. about privacy. Bacard argues that our "Information Age" has a flip
  12. side, namely the "Surveillance Age." With both funny and scary
  13. examples, Bacard illustrates how everyone is at risk because of
  14. "data sharks" (people, corporations, and governments) who trade our
  15. personal secrets for their gain. He devastates the knee jerk
  16. reaction "Whatsamatter, I've got nothing to hide."
  17.  
  18. Bacard's earlier book, "Hunger for Power: Who Rules the World and
  19. How," prepared him for a fresh view of cyberspace. In "Computer
  20. Privacy Handbook," Bacard tells how his meetings with John Markoff,
  21. John Perry Barlow, Phil Zimmermann, Jim Warren, Mitchell Kapor and
  22. other cyberspace leaders led him to see the connections between
  23. political power and computer privacy. Very interesting story...

  25. The book is divided into four main parts:

  30. * A User-friendly Manual for PGP
  31. * Pro-privacy Resources

  33. "Computer Privacy Handbook" covers many topics, including Clipper
  34. Chip, Digital Telephony, Pretty Good Privacy, Anonymous Remailers,
  35. and DigiCash. Two of my favorite sections were Bacard's analysis of
  36. the cash-free society and the psychology of privacy.

  38. The book is clearly written with colorful anecdotes.

  40. Bacard gives much praise to EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation),
  41. EPIC (Electronic Privacy Information Center), and CPSR (Computer
  42. Professionals for Social Responsibility). These groups must be
  43. thrilled by the "Computer Privacy Handbook".

  45. As for my criticism... In the next edition, I hope Bacard will tell
  46. American readers what we can learn from pro-privacy movements in
  47. other countries. I'd also like him to speculate about future
  48. technologies.

  63. the wild new regions of the domain we call Cyberspace. What many of

  80. increases our privacy and our freedom. Far from it. It only makes
  81. us redouble our efforts.

  83. At the same time, it does remind us that we have to look beyond
  84. Washington to solve our problems. Mere talk is not enough. When
  85. government is unable to respect the rights of individuals and
  86. stands in the way of those rights, direct action is required.

  89. been created to put control of privacy much more directly in the
  90. hands of the citizens of Cyberspace themselves. Andre Bacard's
